EDUCATION

I Love My Smokefree Childhood.

Community and Public Health focuses on working with high need Schools, which are those with high Māori and Pacific populations or a high level of deprivation.

Community and Public Health also works in early childhood centres.

The aim is to assist these settings to develop healthy learning environments, with our philosophy behind this approach being that healthy children learn better.

Staff work in depth with a range of education settings and providers to ensure that their environments support healthy behaviour and maximise each child's learning potential, using a whole setting approach.  The health issue areas of focus include healthy eating, hauora/wellbeing, physical activity and smokefree.

Smokefree

Smokefree (SF) support is available to Early Education Centres, Te Kohanga Reo, Schools and the Tertiary sector.  This support ranges from advice about legislative requirements through to implementation of policy/practices in your particular setting.

The overall goal of SF is to reduce smoking initiation by youth, protect our children/youth from the harm of second hand smoke as well as to encourage smokers to quit.
