Health Promoting Schools are schools which display, in everything they say and do, support and commitment to enhancing the emotional, social, physical and moral wellbeing of their school community.' (World Health Organisation)
- The Health Promoting Schools (HPS) initiative was developed by the World Health Organisation (WHO), and in 1997 was established nationally in NZ.
- HPS is a process, rather than a programme, that works through a whole school community approach
- The HPS framework is a useful guide enabling planning, about what will happen in a school, to be both comprehensive and holistic
- Research tells us that a whole-school approach that is multi-factorial and sustained over time will have benefits for the school community (WHO 2006)
Health Promoting Schools' advisors assist schools to use the HPS process, to bring together the Board of Trustees, Principal, Staff, students, parents/caregivers, whānau, community and local organisations to create a shared vision for the future which will enhance learning, health and hauora/wellbeing for all students.
Staff also work to improve the health and well being of the local Māori community through strengthening the Māori focus in health promoting schools, and also works collaboratively with health promoting school providers, the health education and social welfare sectors, whānau and iwi Māori.
Each school starts with a different vision and plans for different outcomes.

Secondary Youth Forum 2011
Throughout the new and evolving recovery process, it is important that youth are able to contribute to the shaping of the City that they will inherit. We recognize the importance of being able to ensure that ideas, opinions and visions of our young people are encapsulated in the planning and environments which will guide their future.
The Health Promoting Schools (HPS) Advisors recently organized a Youth Forum which was well supported by our HPS secondary schools.
Before the forum, each school was asked to write down on ‘Post It’ notes “What has changed for you since February?”
