The Mid- Canterbury region lies between the Rakaia and Rangitata rivers, including the main township of Ashburton. Community and Public Health provides services to the more 27 000 people of this area, and is based at the Ashburton Hospital site.
The small team here includes two health promoters and a health protection officer (available 2 days a week) and is primarily focused on:
- Working with the Mäori to ensure services that are available are promoted and accessible to Mäori in the region.
- Promoting healthy choices and healthy environments for the people of Mid Canterbury especially in the areas of Nutrition and Physical Activity
- Promoting the Smokefree message including providing assistance as a Designated Officer for the Smokefree Act
- Providing services health protection areas including communicable disease control, food safety and environmental health
The Ashburton office also consists of a small Community Health Information Centre, stocking a selection of health information resources (from the Ministry of Health and other health providers) which are free to the public, as well as providing advice on a range of public health issues.
